Freediving, also called breath-hold or apnea diving, is diving on a single breath. Freediving is amazing, and by learning how to freedive safely, you can enjoy being under the water.
Freediving can be risky and it is vital never to practice without an experienced person with you at all times.
There are lots of reasons to learn to freedive, it's not all about how deep you go. Freediving does not have to be about pushing your limits of depth or time.
By learning the breathing and relaxation skills associated with freediving, you can learn how to use less air whilst scuba diving, dive down and take pictures of underwater life, or even learn how to catch your own dinner!
"The scuba diver dives to look around. The freediver dives to look inside"
Umberto Pelizzari
Freediving is not an extreme, adrenalin sport, in fact, it's quite the opposite. It is a unique sport, which uses both physical and mental control to allow you to develop the ability to hold your breath and dive into the water. The control and relaxation that you learn through freediving (and through yoga!) can help to control anxiety and build confidence!
It's not just freedivers who could benefit from the skills and techniques involved in freediving...
SCUBA Divers : Are you a gas-guzzler?? Freediving can help with your relaxation and confidence in the water. This, combined with good breathing technique can help you use your air more efficiently. This means the air in your tank lasts longer. This means you can stay longer or dive more safely! What's not to love?? You might even decide to ditch the tanks for good (like I did!!).
Surfers : Worried about being held down after a wipeout? Freediving and breathhold practice can help give you confidence to survive that big wave.
