frequently asked questions...
Need a bit more info?
Here are the most commonly asked questions...
I've never dived before. Is a 2* course suitable for me?
Yes.
AIDA 2* Freediver is perfect for beginners, you just need to be comfortable in the water, and able to swim a minimum of 300m (12 lengths of a average pool).
Is there an age limit?
Yes.
You need to be over 18 years of age to dive with us. There's no upper age limit, provided you are reasonably fit and healthy.
Speaking of fit and healthy, I'm not some super-fit health-freak. Can I still learn to freedive?
Yes.
You don't have to be an extreme athlete to freedive. It will help if you are reasonably fit, and a non-smoker, but the key thing is relaxation. Provided that you can be relaxed in water, you can learn to freedive.
You will need to complete a medical statement (found here). If you can answer "no" to all the statements, you can sign the medical yourself. If you answer "yes" to anything, it simply means that your doctor must agree and sign the form for you.
Is freediving dangerous?
Potentially.
Most activities carry a level of risk and freediving is no different. I believe that good training and slow progression will help
manage and minimise those risks. You will only be taught by an experienced and qualified instructor. You will progress at a safe and steady level. You'll learn all about safety and rescue techniques.
What do I need to bring?
In an ideal world, you'd have a mask and snorkel, a pair of freedive fins, a wetsuit, a stopwatch, a weightbelt and lead weights and your swimming gear! But, don't worry if you don't have these things. I can usually lend you mask, fins, weights and stopwatches for your course. I can't always lend you a wetsuit, but it IS a pool course, so you can usually manage without one.
So, you just really need your normal swimming gear (trunks, swimsuit, towel).
I'm really keen, and want to buy my own kit, what should I buy?
Buying kit can be a minefield! I can help give you advice and recommend particular kit, depending on what type of diving you want to do. Please don't buy kit on impulse, as you might find that you've made a costly mistake. Feel free to contact me for kit advice!
What qualification will I get?
Provided that you achieve all the course requirements, you'll recieve an official AIDA qualification.
Is there any practice I can do before the course?
Yes.
I'll send you an email when you join a course, with details of practice. You don't have to do it, but, as they say, practice makes perfect!! Please DON'T practice in your local swimming pool, or even in your bath at home. The first rule of freediving is to never freedive alone. Freediving can be potentially risky if you don't know what you're doing, that's why I believe in education.
